Regency Valentine, addressed to a Miss L. Shafe of White Row, Spitalfields (London), pre-stamp handstruck unpaid twopenny post, 14 February 1818. Folding paper card bearing manufacturer's watermark ('Dobbs 1815'), originally folded for the purpose of postage with the red sealing wax still present. Dobbs Patent with embossed floral border and corner designs depicting cupid in a variety of poses (firing arrows into love hearts, playing a harp) with French phrases in scrolls. Central design with manuscript romantic verse within a gilt love heart, vibrant watercolour floral border surmounted by two gilt doves and a heart pierced with crossed arrows.'An affectionate pledge of Unfeigned Attachment; From him, who upon the return of another Valentine's Day, looks forward with pleasure, to the time when his hopes may be realised; & at the altar of Hymen he shall receive the hand, accompanied with the heart of her for whom he feels - not a wild and romantic love, which abates after a short acquaintance:- but an affection which time increases rather than diminishes'. Condition very good, well-preserved with bold colours and script, several very minor archival tape repairs to short tears at extremities and on the postal address
