S HUNT Four Early X-Ray Photographs C.1898, three of the four signed in the image (probably by fashioning wire into a signature), mounted in a glazed oak frame with a photograph of his apparatus and an explanatory article reproduced from the Southern Times dated February 5th, 1898; X-ray photograph of a lady's hand showing bones and her ring, exposure time 40 seconds, distance of tube from plate 10in; X-ray photograph showing part of a needle in the heel of a foot, exposure time four minutes; X-ray photograph of a man's arm broken a second time, showing the wire by which it was repaired 12 years earlier, photographed by S Hunt in the hospital; X-ray photograph showing a man's broken collar bone, exposure time 15 minutes, distance from tube to plate 18in. Notes: these are some of the earliest surviving medical X-rays. X-rays were discovered in 1895 but not adopted immediately for medical purposes. The photographs of the needle in the heel and the broken arm obtained a special certificate of merit at the Bristol and Clifton arts and Crafts society Exhibition, November 1901. With hand written pencil note 'This album was given to Princess Louise for her 10th birthday by Charles Thurston Thompson with permission from her father Prince Albert in 1858. The Princess Louise showed a great aptitude for art and drawing at a very early age. this album Photographs of Raphael's Drawings at Windsor Castle consisting of 30 photographs compiled by Thompson was given to the child to encourage her with her artistic talent (sic), and it was shown to the Princess on occasions at her art lessons'.
