Edinburgh business celebrates 10,000th antique shipment

One Edinburgh business blossomed during the recession as investors turned away from the money markets and instead put their money into tangible items like art, antiques and expensive whiskies – a trend that still continues today.

Mail Boxes Etc. Edinburgh, which specialises in shipping art, collectables and antiques all over the world, recently celebrated its 10,000th antique shipment – an exquisite book of illustrations by Edmund Dulac, signed by the artist, sold through Lyon and Turnbull. A Fairy Garland, being tales from the old French, was published in London by Cassell & Company and in New York by Charles Scribner’s Sons, in 1928. It features a half-title signed by Dulac, alongside an original watercolour sketch of a fairy and 12 coloured plates, on original velum gilt.

This stunning piece was bought by Craig Talsma, a private buyer who took the advice of the auctioneer and asked Mail Boxes Etc. to collect, pack and ship it to him at his home in America. Mr Talsma said: “It has been a great experience dealing with your friendliness and prompt attention to service my needs. Bidding on items from overseas can be a little nerve-racking when the auction house itself does not provide shipping options. You have stepped up with great, fast, and friendly service to get my items delivered. Thank you from your customer overseas in the US!”

Mike Smith from MBE Edinburgh commented: “We were delighted to be able to ship Mr Talsma’s item entirely free-of-charge as a special commemoration of our 10,000th shipment. We’re pleased and proud that he found our service so helpful.”

Mail Boxes Etc. Edinburgh operates three stores around the city. Partners Mike Smith, David Hastings, Dag Docherty and John-Eirik Docherty spotted an opportunity to carve a niche for themselves some 15 years ago and decided to focus on shipping services for art, antiques and other high-value items. The business is thriving, and other recent shipments have included a First Edition of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, a painting by Dali, sketches by Picasso and 70 bottles of whisky with a value of around £52,000.

MBE Edinburgh works with all the major auction houses, from Bonhams to Lyon and Turnbull, Shapes Auctioneers, Thomson Roddick and Browns, as well as a wide range of art galleries, including Anthony Woodd, The Open Eye Gallery and Urbane Art Gallery, to name just a few. For the past ten years, MBE Edinburgh has been working with the AIE Edinburgh Art Fair and looks forward to continuing that relationship at this November’s Fair. These specialists are happy to be able to recommend to their customers a reliable, knowledgeable shipping service which includes everything from collection of the item to safe, secure packaging and range of shipping options from leading providers like UPS, TNT, DHL, FedEx and Parcelforce Worldwide.

Lyon and Turnbull were delighted to congratulate MBE Edinburgh on their milestone shipment: “Having worked with the team at Mailboxes Etc Edinburgh for nearly 10 years, they would definitely be one of the first companies we would recommend for the packing and shipping of antiques – covering all areas from fine jewellery to delicate ceramics. Mailboxes Edinburgh have the experience to safely deliver our buyers’ latest acquisitions wherever they are in the world. A well-deserved congratulations on their 10,000th shipment from the team at Lyon & Turnbull.”

Alongside its UK and international shipping expertise, Mail Boxes Etc. Edinburgh provides a range of services for businesses and individuals, including mailing address and mailbox services, print and copy, and stationery.
