A 19th Century political and artist interest inkwell, constructed from a large chip of wood mounted with silver plated feet and brackets surmounted with a silver plated inkwell given to the sculptor Albert Toft by Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone accompanied by a paper note inscribed that this was the last tree chopped down by Gladstone and given to Toft by Gladstone on leaving Hawarden Castle on September 18th 1887. 15 cm x 6.5 cm x 8 cm. Albert Toft's sculpture of Gladstone was modelled from life and acclaimed as one of the best of the subject, together with a 19th Century ivory hand mirror (2)
